Cité de l'Innovation: A New Silhouette for the Jussieu Campus

For several months I have been documenting the progress of the Cité de l’Innovation (PARISPARC project) at Sorbonne University, designed by BIG – Bjarke Ingels Group and OXO Architectes. This ambitious building, at the heart of the Jussieu campus, is not merely a new edifice; it redraws the urban landscape by striking a balance between integration and architectural rupture.

A dialogue with the existing: connecting rather than imposing

Set between the modernist buildings of Édouard Albert (the Jussieu “Gril”) and Urbain Cassan, the Cité de l’Innovation faces a major challenge: fitting into a dense, history-laden site without breaking its harmony. Its sculpted volume does not seek to overwhelm the context, but to respect and amplify it:

• Its inclined façade catches and reflects the neighbouring Institut du Monde Arabe, playing with light and perspective to establish visual continuity.
• Its deformed volume answers the constraints of the local planning code, avoiding obstruction of views and ensuring maximum natural light.
• The central atrium, conceived as an indoor canyon, becomes a space of connection between the building’s functions and the flows of the campus.

The site in action: technical feats and architectural vision

Documenting such a project also means capturing the way architecture comes alive through construction. On my most recent visits I observed major progress:

1. Installation of the glass façades: the teams at Simeon Structure & Facade System began fitting the glass panels, gradually transforming the building and strengthening its interaction with the surroundings.
2. Emergence of the indoor canyon: this central space is starting to reveal its full potential, filtering light and playing with reflections to amplify the sense of openness.
3. Aerial and site perspectives: access to the elevating platform allowed me to capture unique angles on the façade assembly and the dialogue between structure and transparency.

A project in transformation: between heritage and innovation

Following the evolution of the Cité de l’Innovation means witnessing, in real time, the transformation of a key site in the Parisian university landscape. At the crossroads of architectural influences, this project demonstrates that innovation can coexist with heritage, and that contemporary architecture can enrich its context rather than unsettle it.
